FIT4CEA moves from launch to action: four European Living Labs advance climate-resilient food production

SAPO15 September 2026 at 14:13

The FIT4CEA consortium is a project funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe programme, comprising 22 partners from 12 different countries. The consortium aims to make greenhouses and vertical farms more sustainable and better prepared to face future challenges related to climate change.

Three months after the official project kick-off meeting, which took place at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, FIT4CEA has moved from the planning phase to concrete action. This progress marks the project's transition to practical implementation.

Four European Living Labs are currently advancing the development of climate-resilient food production systems. These laboratories serve as spaces for innovation and experimentation, where solutions are being tested to make food production more sustainable and adapted to climate change.

The consortium works collaboratively to develop and implement technologies and practices that can be scaled and applied in different European contexts, thereby contributing to food security and environmental sustainability in the continental agricultural sector.

Why this matters

The readers directly affected are farmers, food producers and agricultural sector companies that use or plan to use greenhouses and vertical farms. The project represents a significant EU investment in innovation for the food sector and establishes research priorities that may influence future agricultural and funding policies in the region.
