A country has surpassed the barrier of 100,000 centenarians, marking a significant milestone in the aging of its population. The number represents a considerable increase compared to previous decades, reflecting improvements in living conditions and healthcare.
Almost 90% of people over 100 years old in that country are women. This gender disparity in extreme aging has been consistent over the years, with women representing a much larger proportion of supercentenarians.
This phenomenon is related to the overall increase in average life expectancy and improvements in preventive and curative healthcare. The country now faces new challenges related to population aging, including the need to adapt pension systems, healthcare and social support to the needs of the very elderly.
