Rains leave two dead and one missing in SP; government declares emergency in five cities

oglobo15 September 2026 at 14:27

The rains that have been hitting the state of São Paulo since Friday (11) left two dead, one missing and nine injured, according to the state Civil Defense balance. The storm also left 313 people homeless and 1,509 displaced. Since the beginning of the storm, 53 occurrences related to bad weather have been recorded, with 14 of them in the last 24 hours, distributed across 14 cities.

Given the damages, the state government homologated an emergency situation in five municipalities: Registro, Ribeira, Iporanga, Barra do Turvo and Piracaia. In Vale do Ribeira, 19 shelters were set up in six municipalities, installed in sports gyms, schools, event centers, hotels and churches.

In Itaquaquecetuba, a landslide hit six homes and left 24 people homeless, being considered the most serious case among the affected municipalities. The state government also reinforced health actions, road recovery and support for rural producers. Starting Wednesday (16), two mobile health units will be made available to serve the population of the affected areas.

Why this matters

Residents of São Paulo, particularly those in the Vale do Ribeira region and Itaquaquecetuba, are directly affected by flooding and landslides that have caused deaths, injuries and displacement. The state of emergency declared in five municipalities indicates significant infrastructure damage requiring government response. People should stay alert to weather warnings and follow evacuation orders from civil defense authorities.
