Suspects accused of being part of militia that extorts money from condo residents in Itaboraí are targeted by MPRJ

extra15 September 2026 at 13:20

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) carried out on Tuesday an operation that executed three search warrants against suspects accused of being part of a militia that extorted money from residents of a residential condo in Itaboraí, in the Metropolitan Region of Rio.

The agents seized cell phones, notebooks, USB drives, and documents belonging to the suspects' private security company. The teams executed the warrants both at the company's headquarters and at the investigated individuals' residential addresses.

The investigations began after anonymous reports sent to the MPRJ stated that a condo syndicate was coerced by armed men to hire the private security company to provide services — previously, the amounts were paid directly to the security guards.

Why this matters

Residents of Itaboraí and surrounding areas face direct threats from armed militias operating under the guise of private security services, coercing community managers into paying for protection. The operation follows anonymous reports that armed men pressured a condo syndicate to hire their company, replacing direct payments to watchmen with extortion through a criminal enterprise. This case illustrates the ongoing problem of militia expansion in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro.
