The secretary-general of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, accused the AD Government of profiting from fuels since 2024. The accusation was directed at the executive led by Luís Montenegro and is related to the evolution of fuel taxation.
According to José Luís Carneiro, the Executive is obtaining higher tax revenues than it was when it took power. Specifically, the Government currently profits an additional 8.7 cents per litre of diesel and 5.8 cents per litre of gasoline in taxes, compared to the period when it began governing.
This accusation arises in the context of a broader debate about fuel tax policy in Portugal and the impact on prices paid by consumers. The PS, through its secretary-general, has been scrutinising the AD Government's actions on this matter.
José Luís Carneiro's position is part of the PS's opposition to the AD Government in the Assembly of the Republic, where the Socialist Party is the main opposition force to the AD's minority executive.
