GNR receives two police dogs specialized in tobacco detection

Correio de Sintra15 September 2026 at 12:29

The Republican National Guard reinforced its operational means with a new vehicle and two police dogs specialized in the detection of tobacco products. The equipment was donated by Tabaqueira, in the Parish of Rio de Mouro, under an existing cooperation protocol between the two entities for the prevention and combating of illicit trade.

The delivery ceremony took place at the barracks of the GNR Intervention Unit, in Pontinha, in Lisbon. During the event, the new vehicle and its capabilities were presented, and the keys were handed over to the Cynotechnical Section of the Porto Territorial Command. A cynotechnical demonstration was also held with the participation of the military personnel responsible for the training and monitoring of the animals and their respective working dogs.

The new police dogs, designated "Rola" and "Remi", are both Dutch Shepherds and were specifically trained to detect the odor of tobacco products. The two animals will now join GNR teams, constituting an operational reinforcement for the territorial and specialized units in combating illicit trade in tobacco products.

Why this matters

Readers in the Sintra region benefit from this operational reinforcement, as the two new police dogs will act in combating illicit tobacco trade in the territorial units. The protocol between GNR and Tabaqueira demonstrates a public-private partnership to reinforce oversight, following previous initiatives to combat smuggling in the region.
