Nearly three weeks after the floods that devastated Nepal and Tibet, more than four thousand people remain missing. Local authorities have so far recovered 1,399 bodies and remains, but only 103 victims have been handed over to families for burial.
Among the missing are 610 foreigners, including two Portuguese citizens. Authorities have not provided further details about the identity of these two women.
The floods caused one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in the region, with the number of dead and missing significantly exceeding initial expectations. The process of identifying and handing over bodies to families has been proceeding slowly.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing, although efforts are being hindered by terrain conditions and the scale of destruction caused by the flash floods.
