An operation by the Special Actions Group for Combating Organized Crime (Gaeco) from Campinas arrested on Tuesday councilman Carlos Eduardo de Oliveira Franco, known as Du Guaca, from the MDB party, in the city of Itatiba, in inland São Paulo. The action, called Operation Nexus, also carried out 26 search warrants and five (incomplete information in the text) against suspects believed to be part of a group involved with drug trafficking and money laundering.
The Public Ministry points out that the councilman is suspected of being part of the group's core responsible for monitoring 24 hours a day the movement of security forces in Itatiba. The clandestine surveillance system allowed criminals to hide drugs, keep sales points active, and would interrupt sales when police approached.
More than 160 police officers are participating in the operation, which is being carried out by Gaeco together with the Military Police, including teams from the 1st and 10th Special Police Action Battalions (Baep). Search warrants were executed at the parliamentarian's residence and at the Itatiba Municipal Chamber.
