Portugal may be experiencing a localized outbreak of mpox, a possibility admitted by two officials responsible for tracking this infection in Portugal. The situation raises concerns among health authorities, who are closely monitoring the evolution of cases in the country.
A World Health Organization (WHO) report identified 66 recent cases of mpox, figures that drew the attention of Portuguese health authorities. This data contributed to growing concern regarding the epidemiological situation in Portugal.
The officials responsible for tracking the infection emphasized, however, that it is common to see an increase in infections during and after the summer period, which may explain, at least in part, this trend. This seasonality is a factor that should be considered when analyzing the situation.
Earlier this year, the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) had already warned RTP Antena 1 of the existence of a "growing trend" of the disease in Portugal, demonstrating that concern about the spread of mpox is not new and that health authorities have been monitoring the evolution of cases for some time.
