The public tender for the construction of the new Coimbra Maternity Hospital will be launched in the coming weeks, representing an investment of nearly 58 million euros. The announcement was made by the president of the Local Health Unit (ULS) of Coimbra, Francisco Maio Matos, during the celebrations of the 47th anniversary of the National Health Service. The order authorizing the ULS to assume multi-year commitments for the construction was published today in the Official Gazette.
The new Maternity will be built within the perimeter of the Coimbra University Hospitals and will replace the two maternities currently existing in the city. The work is expected to take 36 months and will be financed over the years 2026, 2027, 2028, and 2029, with commitments of 243,902.44 euros in 2026, 23.9 million euros in each of the years 2027 and 2028, and 9.89 million euros in 2029.
Francisco Maio Matos considered that the project represents an investment in future generations and in reinforcing the confidence of families, highlighting that the project has a significance that goes beyond the mere construction of a building. The president of the Coimbra Municipal Council, Ana Abrunhosa, stated that it is an urgent priority and a social, clinical, and territorial imperative.
The project has suffered several delays over the years, having once been pointed to for inauguration in 2024, and in 2023, it was expected that the tender could be launched in the first quarter of 2024. At the ceremony, the efforts of the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, who was present, were highlighted, as well as the work started about 15 years ago under the leadership of José Martins Nunes.
