The party Juntos Pela República Popular (JPP) requested the Regional Government of Madeira clearer rules for fishermen, following the seizure of fish in Caniçal. The Madeiran party does not contest the inspection of fishing activity, but understands that the episode should serve to evaluate the framework of traditional fishing practices in the region.
The JPP considers that it is necessary to clarify the norms that regulate fishing activity, in order to avoid similar situations in the future. The political formation recognizes the importance of inspection, but argues that fishermen need more precise guidance on the rules applicable to their activity.
The party understands that the Regional Government should analyse the legal framework of traditional fishing practices in Madeira, simultaneously guaranteeing compliance with the rules and the protection of the ancestral activities that form part of the regional identity. This assessment would make it possible to create a regulatory framework better suited to local reality.
