The European Commission opened applications for a new list of priority energy projects, which opens an opportunity for the electricity interconnection between Portugal and Morocco to access European funding. The so-called European status of Project of Common Interest would allow the connection that Lisbon and Rabat are studying to apply for community funds.
The interconnection between the two countries is a long-standing project that has been discussed over the years. This new path to European funds comes at a time when the European Union seeks to diversify its energy sources and strengthen cooperation with neighboring countries.
Portugal and Morocco have been studying this electrical connection that would allow the exchange of renewable energy between the two countries. The Project of Common Interest status is granted by the European Commission to projects that contribute to the energy and climate objectives of the Union.
