The history of Kosovo should not be rewritten because of Hashim Thaci's trial, argued Kosovar political scientist Donika Emini. Thaci, a former independence leader and president of Kosovo, is currently facing trial at the International Criminal Court, which has generated debate about how the country's history should be interpreted.
According to Emini's analysis, recognizing crimes and preserving the memory of Kosovo's liberation struggle are not incompatible positions. The specialist argues that it is possible to do justice to the crimes committed without erasing the historical context of the conflict that led to the territory's independence.
The political scientist also argues that coexistence between Albanians and Serbs is possible in Kosovo, despite persistent ethnic tensions since the conflict of the 1990s. This position comes at a time when the judicial process against Thaci raises delicate questions about the balance between justice and national historical narrative.
