A 10% rise in oil and gas increases European inflation by up to 0.36 percentage points

For every 10% rise in oil and gas prices, global inflation in Europe could increase by up to 0.36 percentage points, according to a study by the New Economics Foundation (NEF), published today. Researchers from this organization analyzed the impact of energy prices on the European economy and quantified the effects of variations in these fuels on inflation.

Based on a 50% rise in oil and gas prices, researchers concluded that this could increase inflation by an additional 1.8 percentage points in the following year, on top of existing inflation levels. This impact would be felt significantly in consumer price indices throughout Europe.

The New Economics Foundation presented these findings through a statement, in which it detailed the methodology and results of the research on the relationship between energy prices and European inflation.

Why this matters

European consumers face the risk of significant increases in the prices of goods and services, as energy costs are a determining factor in price formation throughout the economy. This study follows a recent period of volatility in energy markets and offers a tool to anticipate the impact of future fluctuations in oil and gas prices on European economies.
