A fire destroyed in the early hours of this Tuesday the carriages of the tourist train of the Business Association of Póvoa de Varzim, which occurred at Praça do Almada, next to the association's headquarters, where the equipment remained overnight. The train's parking area was also affected by the flames, with only the locomotive escaping as it was sheltered.
The alert was given around 4:30 am, but when emergency services arrived at the scene there was little that could be done to save the carriages. The firefighters' intervention focused on fighting and extinguishing the fire, preventing the spread of flames to other nearby structures.
The PSP took charge of the incident and proceeded to isolate the area, which remains cordoned off while investigation procedures are underway. The authorities are investigating the circumstances of the fire, with the hypothesis of an act of vandalism emerging as the main line of investigation.
The tourist train was during the summer one of the attractions used in the tourism promotion and animation of the city of Póvoa de Varzim.
