Nine people detained and 100 fuel canisters seized in Albufeira

Jornal do Algarve15 September 2026 at 09:15

Nine people suspected of aiding drug trafficking were detained and 100 canisters of fuel were seized yesterday in Albufeira. The operation was carried out by elements of the Maritime Police and the National Republican Guard, after "suspicious movements" were identified.

The nine detainees are men aged between 17 and 29, and were intercepted near Falésia beach. The Coastal Control Unit clarified that the canisters were on the beach, although it did not quantify the total volume of fuel seized.

In addition to the canisters, a vehicle, five registration certificates, three keys belonging to different vehicles, a drone and five mobile phones were also seized. The GNR also revealed that further procedural steps are being taken, in coordination with the Public Prosecutor's Office.

The detainees will be brought before the court for initial judicial questioning and possible application of precautionary measures, after the conclusion of the ongoing procedures.

Why this matters

Readers in the Algarve region learn that authorities are active in combating drug trafficking, with an operation that involved fuel seized near Falésia beach. Nine men were detained and will now be questioned judicially, which may indicate the dismantling of a local support network for trafficking. The seizure of fuel also raises questions about the role of fuel smuggling in financing this criminal activity in the region.
