Tiger mosquito arrived in Castelo Branco. This does not mean there is dengue

ZAP Notícias15 September 2026 at 06:40

The Local Health Unit (ULS) of Castelo Branco alerted this Monday to the presence in the municipality of the tiger mosquito, a species capable of transmitting diseases such as dengue, zika and chikungunya. The arrival of this species in the municipality had already been anticipated by health authorities.

The presence of the mosquito species Aedes albopictus was detected through the Vector Surveillance Network (REVIVE), developed by the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge and the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), with the collaboration of the Health Unit.

Despite the detection of the mosquito, authorities emphasize that, for now, there is no virus circulating in the municipality, so there is no immediate risk of dengue. The ULS of Castelo Branco issued the alert through a statement published on Facebook.

Why this matters

Residents of Castelo Branco now face a new public health risk, as the tiger mosquito can transmit serious diseases. The detection through the REVIVE surveillance network allows local health authorities to prepare control measures and inform the population about prevention, although there is no confirmed circulating virus in the region.

Thirty years creating 'super-athlete' mice gave an unexpected result

After more than three decades of research with 100 pairs of mice, scientists at the University of California, Riverside discovered that the animals selected to be exceptionally athletic suffer no expected biological penalty — neither do they live shorter lives nor have fewer offspring. This unexpected result challenges a central theory in evolutionary biology, according to which organisms face inevitable trade-offs when distributing limited energy among different vital functions.
