AI has arrived. The school remains at recess!

SAPO Notícias15 September 2026 at 00:01

UNESCO gathered 21 texts on Artificial Intelligence and Education, producing a publication that presents various ideas on the topic. Among the proposals mentioned are the end of assessment as we know it, the use of intelligent agents, personalized learning, and co-creation between humans and machines.

However, the publication hesitates precisely where it should present a break with the current educational model. Although it recognizes the disruptive potential of artificial intelligence, the collection of texts then tries to accommodate that disruption within the school that already exists.

The article criticizes this approach, suggesting that this is not how one should work with artificial intelligence. The attempt to integrate technology into existing school structures is seen as a way to co-opt innovation instead of letting it truly transform the educational system.

Why this matters

This article is of interest to educators, educational policy decision-makers, and students in Portuguese-speaking countries, as it questions how Artificial Intelligence is being integrated into schools. The criticism that UNESCO does not go far enough in educational disruption suggests that current educational policies may be wasting the true transformative potential of AI, directly affecting the quality of teaching that students receive.
