Rain in SP leaves communities isolated and families displaced in Vale do Ribeira

oglobo14 September 2026 at 19:35

The Vale do Ribeira region, on the border between São Paulo and Paraná, has been facing a critical flooding situation since Saturday (12). The overflow of the Ribeira do Iguape River, which rose 11 meters above normal due to rains and high flow, caused widespread flooding in the area.

The state Civil Defense reported that 148 homeless families in urban areas have been sheltered in 17 emergency shelters. Several quilombola communities in the region, which concentrates the largest number of remaining quilombola communities in the state of São Paulo, are isolated due to road blocks and flooding points on the roads.

Communities such as Ivaporunduva and André Lopes are completely isolated, with water and electricity supply affected, as reported by community leaders to the Socioenvironmental Institute (ISA). The situation of these communities is especially concerning due to the difficulty of access.

On Monday (14), Civil Defense stated it is seeking access by land and air to the affected areas, setting up an operation with vessels to deliver food to the isolated communities.

Why this matters

Readers in the region are directly facing the effects of flooding, with families displaced and entire communities without access to basic supplies. The quilombola communities, historically vulnerable, are particularly affected by isolation, highlighting inequalities in assistance to traditional populations during natural disasters. The ongoing rescue operation seeks to assist these more distant and vulnerable populations.
