A driver was intercepted by the Local Police of Castilleja de la Cuesta, in the province of Seville, after being observed driving erratically. The agents approached the motorist after seeing him perform confusing maneuvers, noting that he was not wearing a seatbelt and was using a mobile phone while driving. The breathalyzer test revealed a rate of 1 mg/l of alcohol in exhaled air, a value that quadruples the maximum limit generally allowed in Spain, which is 0.25 mg/l, and which exceeds the threshold from which the infraction may have criminal relevance.
When confronted with the result, the man tried to justify the high alcohol rate, telling the agents that the value was due to the vinegar present in the gazpacho he had consumed before getting behind the wheel. The explanation did not convince the Local Police officers, who dismissed this possibility and informed the driver that he would be subject to a procedure for an alleged offense against road safety.
The case quickly caught attention on social media after the police force itself shared a post about the incident. The story generated dozens of reactions, many marked by tones of surprise at the explanation given, with comments ranging from humor to disbelief at the reason put forward by the motorist.
Regardless of the curious justification, the authorities stressed that the rate detected represented a significant risk to road safety. The man will be charged with an offense related to driving under the influence of alcohol, in a case that gained notoriety far beyond the roads of Seville due to the unusual explanation presented to the officers.
