Are cases of people found dead at home in Madeira increasing?

dnoticias.pt14 September 2026 at 17:00

Two people were found dead on Saturday in different residences in the municipality of Santa Cruz, Madeira. The first case involved a 65-year-old man, in the Cancela area, in Caniço. Shortly after, a second man, aged 70, was found dead in Ribeira de Santa Cruz.

In both cases, firefighters were called to force open the door and found the victims already deceased inside the homes.

The two similar occurrences, in the same municipality and just a few hours apart, join other recent news about identical situations in the region, possibly creating the perception that this type of case is increasing in Madeira.

Why this matters

Readers in Madeira may be concerned about a possible increase in cases of people found dead at home, especially elderly people living alone. The temporal and geographical proximity of the two occurrences in the same municipality raises questions about the safety and monitoring of vulnerable residents on the island.
