Finance Minister Dario Durigan defended that the Brazilian state should be neither big nor small, but have a size that responds to society's needs. In a video appearance at the 4th edition of the Brazil Today Seminar, held in São Paulo this Monday by Grupo Esfera, Durigan stated that one should not be guided by "rigid models" when defining the role of the state.
The minister acknowledged that his position goes against what the business community and financial markets think, who prefer a leaner state. Even so, Durigan maintained that sectors such as public security, basic sanitation, urban infrastructure, and public transportation demand responses from the state.
According to Durigan, the solution to bottlenecks in these sectors will not come exclusively from the public sector, requiring direct integration with the private sector. The seminar, organized by Grupo Esfera, is a study, research, and debate group that brings together business leaders, CEOs, and other professionals.
