A collective funeral was held in Bukavu on Monday in honor of the 26 children who died in a fire at a school in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The tragedy occurred three days before the funeral ceremony.
The fire also caused a stampede among the students, contributing to the fatal toll of 26 children dead. The exact circumstances that sparked the fire have not yet been fully clarified.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) joined local authorities in demanding a full investigation into the incident. The organizations are calling for accountability for the deaths of the children.
Bukavu is one of the main cities in eastern DRC, a region frequently affected by security and infrastructure problems in schools.
