Civil Police investigate use of shared needles during science fair at school in Recreio; director to be heard

oglobo14 September 2026 at 16:20

The Civil Police, through the 42nd Police Station, is investigating the case of lancet sharing during a science fair at Colégio Tamandaré, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro. Police officers went to the school on Monday morning to gather additional information about the incident, which happened on Saturday during glucose tests. Lancets are instruments that pierce the finger to collect blood and should not be reused between different people.

Almost all participants in the science fair were children, although at least one adult also underwent the blood collection procedure, according to reports from parents confirmed by the educational institution itself. The school administration was called by the police to provide clarifications about the case.

According to the investigation, each lancet was used on up to three different people during the glucose tests performed at the event. The authorities advised students who underwent the exam during the cultural fair to seek a hospital for follow-up care.

By the end of Sunday afternoon, at least 23 people had sought hospitals for prophylactic treatment, of which 20 were treated at Hospital Municipal Lourenço Jorge, located in Barra da Tijuca.

Why this matters

Readers in the Recreio area and surroundings need to know that children and adults who participated in the science fair at Colégio Tamandaré may have been exposed to diseases transmissible through needle sharing, and should seek medical care for prophylactic treatment, as 23 people had already done by Sunday. The investigation seeks to clarify the circumstances and responsibilities of the incident.
