The Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) accused military police officer Everthon Silva dos Santos of torture with the purpose of punishment. The accusation was received by the Military Justice Audit Court.
The officer was accused of using pepper spray against two men inside an entirely closed bus while taking them to the police station. The case occurred in September 2023, on route 474, connecting Copacabana, in the South Zone, to Jacaré, in the North Zone of Rio.
According to the accusation, the spray was deployed on the route between the location of the approach, on Presidente Vargas Avenue, in the Downtown area, and the 4th Police Station (Presidente Vargas), further along the same avenue. The two young men were detained under suspicion of involvement in the theft of cell phones inside the bus.
