Technical compliance gains strength in steel pipe selection

oglobo14 September 2026 at 15:52

Companies in industrial, construction and infrastructure sectors have dedicated more attention to the technical specification of steel pipes used in their projects, prioritizing normative compliance and mechanical resistance over availability or initial cost, according to industry specialists. This behavioral change reflects a trend of valuing quality over time to the detriment of decisions based solely on price or immediate material availability.

Walter Gongora Junior, CEO of Tubonasa, stated that small differences in standards, thickness or resistance determine whether a system will operate safely for 20 years or present problems already in the first year of operation. According to him, specifying NBR 5580 or NBR 5590 in the order is not bureaucracy, but rather the guarantee that the correct material will arrive at the construction site.

NBR 5580 is the Brazilian standard that establishes requirements for carbon steel pipes intended for conducting fluids such as water, gas, steam and compressed air, covering three wall classes: light, medium and heavy. This standard serves as a reference for the threaded pipe known in the market as DIN 2440.

NBR 5590 covers carbon steel pipes with or without seam, black or galvanized, complementing the universe of normative options available to specifiers who seek to ensure the technical adequacy of their projects.

Why this matters

Engineering and construction professionals and companies in the region need to be aware of these changes in purchasing practices, as correct technical specification can mean the difference between a system reliable for decades and premature failures. The shift in focus can also impact local suppliers and specifiers, requiring greater attention to normative documentation in material orders.
