The Directorate-General for Health has issued an alert about air quality in mainland Portugal due to the presence of dust coming from Africa. The phenomenon is expected during the beginning of this week.
The areas most affected by poor air quality are Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, Alentejo and the Algarve. The DGS recommends extra precautions for the population of these regions during this period.
Dust particles from the African continent can pose health risks, especially for more vulnerable groups such as people with respiratory diseases, children and the elderly.
