Air quality in Portugal is deteriorating significantly due to the presence of dust from North Africa. A mass of air coming from the Maghreb deserts is affecting the country, bringing with it fine suspended particles.
This meteorological situation has been monitored by the relevant authorities and is expected to continue over the next two days. PM10 and PM2.5 particle levels are elevated, which can affect the health of the population, especially more vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases.
The population is advised to avoid prolonged exposure outdoors and to keep windows closed during periods of highest dust concentration. This is a relatively common occurrence in the Mediterranean region, especially during spring and summer.
