EDIA — Alqueva Development and Infrastructure Company launched a public tender with a base price of 650,000 euros for the monitoring of surface water resource quality in the primary network of the Alqueva Multipurpose Development. The contract covers the period between November 2026 and September 2028, with the deadline for submitting proposals ending on September 16. This procedure follows previous monitoring actions, integrating the permanent environmental monitoring programs developed by the company as part of the management and operation of the EMDA infrastructure.
Among the defined objectives are tracking the evolution of water quality, assessing its suitability for different uses, and timely identification of any deterioration situations. The primary network constitutes one of the essential structures of the development, ensuring the storage and transport of water destined for different uses and associated infrastructure within the system.
The new tender starts from a base value higher than that of the previous contract. In 2022, EDIA awarded for 584,132 euros a monitoring contract for the period between January 2023 and December 2024, that is, 65,868 euros less than the maximum limit now set. The company clarifies that the two amounts are not directly comparable, as the first corresponds to an award and the second to the base price of the new procedure.
The environmental surveillance of the EMDA is not limited to surface waters, also having programs directed at groundwater resources and the assessment of ecological quality in the areas covered by the irrigation blocks. The Alqueva water distribution system has significant territorial expression in the Alentejo and is directly associated with irrigation and other uses of water resources.
