The New York Stock Exchange opened the session in negative territory, with the Dow Jones index falling 0.21% to 52,462.23 points, the S&P500 dropping 0.65% to 7,607.51 points and the Nasdaq losing 1.07% to 26,053.66 points. The technology sector was particularly penalized, with Nvidia falling 3.56%, Caterpillar dropping 3.21% and Goldman Sachs slipping 2.27%.
The decline was driven by a request from several technology industry leaders for a slowdown in artificial intelligence development for security reasons. In contrast, some companies such as Salesforce rose 2.11%, McDonald's gained 1.63% and Walt Disney increased 1.44%.
Market analyst at Millennium Investment Banking, Ramiro Loureiro, explained that news about AI, combined with a new rise in oil prices and an escalation of tensions in the Middle East, have been pressuring investor sentiment. This week, the Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision will be the focus of attention, with the market assigning a high probability to an interest rate increase.
In the commodities market, Texas WTI crude oil gained 3.88% to $103.93 per barrel and Brent rose 4.32% to $109.12. In the foreign exchange market, the euro depreciated 0.60% against the dollar, settling at $1.1529.
