The Portuguese association D3 filed a lawsuit in Portuguese civil courts against the companies Meta, TikTok and YouTube, accusing them of creating "addictive" social networks. The complaint was filed at the beginning of the year.
D3 represents consumers and users who claim to have been harmed by the designated "addiction mechanisms" implemented by these digital platforms. The companies are accused of using deliberate strategies to keep users dependent on their services.
This is not an isolated case, as there had already been other similar lawsuits filed against the same companies in different jurisdictions.
In the United States, Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, has already agreed to pay 18 billion dollars to resolve similar complaints related to the creation of addictive mechanisms on its platforms.
