How to live to 110: The immune secret of supercentenarians | By Isabel Duarte

A new study published in the journal Cell Reports reveals that supercentenarians (people over 110 years old) have an unusually high number of cytotoxic CD4 T lymphocytes, immune cells that can directly kill dangerous cells in the body. These cells represented only 4% of T lymphocytes in people between 70 and 99 years old, but rose to 17.6% in supercentenarians — more than four times as many. Furthermore, many of these cells were clones of each other, indicating that they multiplied repeatedly throughout life. The researchers raise the hypothesis that these cells may help eliminate cancer cells before they form tumors, although it is not yet known exactly what their true targets are.

What effect do colors have on our brain?

Colors do not physically exist in light — it only contains wavelengths, and it is the nervous system that constructs the experience of color by processing signals from the retina. Science confirms that there is a neuroscience of color, with research demonstrating how different shades affect emotions, concentration, and human behavior. The human retina has five types of photoreceptors (four types of cones and rods) that work together to create our chromatic perception, and although associations such as red with danger or green with tranquility are widespread, the neurological response to colors is more complex and individual than many imagine.
