Globo TV presenter Alex Escobar was in the spotlight after falling ill during a World Cup broadcast in the United States. On that occasion, he presented difficulty speaking and needed to leave the championship coverage, returning to Brazil to take care of his health. Alex Escobar underwent surgery at Casa de São José, in Rio de Janeiro, to remove a tumor of benign appearance in the thymus, an organ located in the chest region that plays a role in the maturation of immune system cells.
According to information from Rede D'Or, myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease, meaning a condition in which the patient's own immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells of the body. In the specific case of myasthenia, this incorrect action affects the communication between nerves and muscles.
The disease causes muscle weakness that worsens with physical exertion. The condition mainly arises in adulthood and can affect several muscle groups, including the muscles of the eyes, face, arms, and legs, as well as muscles related to breathing.
