Jerónimo Martins Polska target of 121 M€ fine for anti-competitive practice in Poland

SAPO Notícias14 September 2026 at 12:54

The Polish competition and consumer rights regulator, UOKIK, imposed a fine of 525 million zlotys, equivalent to 121 million euros, on Jerónimo Martins Polska. The company owns the Biedronka supermarket chain, one of the main food retail chains in Poland.

The sanction is due to anti-competitive practices identified by the Polish regulator within its market supervision powers. UOKIK is the authority responsible for investigating and punishing any violations of competition rules in that country.

Jerónimo Martins Polska is a subsidiary of the Portuguese group Jerónimo Martins, which operates in the food distribution sector. Biedronka is one of the pillars of the group's activity in the Polish market, where it is one of the largest supermarket chains in the country.

Why this matters

Polish consumers may feel an impact on prices and competition in the food retail sector. Jerónimo Martins, one of the largest private employers in Portugal, faces a historic fine that may affect its financial results and its reputation in the Polish market, where it operates more than 3,500 Biedronka stores.
