Mafra | New circulation scheme to reduce congestion

Jornal de Mafra14 September 2026 at 14:10

The paving stone conservation works on the road surrounding the National Palace of Mafra began 15 days ago, causing significant traffic restrictions in the town and increasing daily congestion. This intervention was deemed necessary by the municipality to enhance the heritage and improve road access.

In order to mitigate the impact on traffic, a reversible lane scheme came into operation today, a temporary measure aimed at improving traffic flow while the works are underway. The municipality states that the intervention could not be carried out at night, in order to respect residents' rest and avoid noise.

Starting today, September 14th, the following schedules apply to the reversible lane: in the direction Carapinheira to Mafra, traffic is allowed from 4pm to 9pm, exclusively on weekdays; in the opposite direction, Mafra to Carapinheira, the lane operates from 9pm to 4pm on weekdays and all day on weekends.

Why this matters

Residents and drivers in Mafra and surrounding areas face significant changes to traffic circulation over the coming weeks, and should adapt to the new reversible lane schedules to plan their journeys. The municipality acknowledges that the intervention causes inconvenience, but argues it is essential for heritage enhancement and improving accessibility.

AI tumbles as tech companies defend slowdown. Trump and China have already reacted

Shares of artificial intelligence-linked companies fell globally this Monday after leaders from Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI appealed for a slowdown in technology development for security reasons. Dario Amodei warned that AI agents could cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damages in the next 6-12 months, while Sam Altman considered extinction risks "unacceptable." Stock market drops were significant: Nvidia and AMD fell 3% in pre-market trading on Wall Street, ASML fell 6% in Europe and Softbank fell more than 13% in Asia. Political reactions diverged, with China accusing American executives of instilling fear and Donald Trump downplaying the warnings, defending US leadership in the industry. The article also highlights that financing costs are rising, raising questions about the future financing of AI infrastructure.
