Portuguese and Spanish researchers are carrying out field work to study the oldest rocks of the territory in the Beira Baixa region. The GEOCHRON project, called "Geochronology of the Oldest Rocks and Fossils", aims to analyze and date these ancient geological formations.
The locations visited during the field work days included Segura, Salvaterra do Extremo, Penha Garcia, Rosmaninhal, Monforte da Beira and Perais, all integrated in Geopark Naturtejo. These municipalities host rock formations of great geological relevance.
The researchers are also preparing a future international scientific excursion in Geopark Naturtejo, which demonstrates the growing recognition of the scientific value of these shaly rocks of Beira Baixa.
The region may be on its way to obtaining international recognition for its geological heritage, with the studies of the GEOCHRON project contributing to a better understanding of the geological history of the territory.
