A scientific study revealed that humans were already consuming drugs 25 thousand years ago. The discovery was made from the analysis of two skeletons found in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Researchers identified in these remains a dental wear pattern compatible with the habit of chewing areca nuts. This type of chewing is known for its psychoactive effects, related to the consumption of narcotic substances.
According to the study, these are the oldest drug consumption traces in the world. The discovery changes the understanding of the history of psychoactive substance use by humanity, indicating that this habit is much older than previously imagined.
