The Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIIMAR) developed a new genomic tool that aims to make clams more resistant. This innovation represents a significant advance for sustainable aquaculture of two of the most relevant clam species worldwide.
One of the species studied was the Japanese clam (Ruditapes philippinarum), which is considered one of the clams with the greatest global economic importance. This species is widely cultivated and has considerable commercial value in the aquaculture industry.
The project had the participation of an international team of researchers, which included CIIMAR. This collaboration between scientists from different countries allowed the gathering of diverse expertise for the development of the genomic tool.
The development of this tool comes in response to the need to make clam production more sustainable and efficient, facing the challenges that the aquaculture industry currently faces in terms of resistance and productivity of cultivated species.
