João Paulo Santos, 46 years old, was arrested by the Anti-Trafficking Unit of the Judicial Police. The man was the coach of Benfica's eagle, the iconic symbol of the Portuguese football club.
According to the investigation, the coach helped a handling service employee to remove cocaine that was being trafficked at Lisbon airport. The scheme involved using his functions at the airport to facilitate the removal of the drug.
The authorities discovered the trafficking operation after an investigation revealed the collaboration between the eagle coach and the handling employee. Both were identified as part of a network that exploited movement at the airport for cocaine smuggling.
