A study conducted by Portuguese researchers explored different possibilities for energy storage through compressed air in porous rocks located at depth. The research analyzed the potential of this technology as a solution to one of the biggest challenges of the energy transition: storing energy efficiently and on a large scale.
The researchers examined theoretical and practical scenarios for implementing these underground reservoirs. The goal was to assess the technical feasibility and the energy storage capacity that this type of infrastructure could offer.
The study results indicate that, in the best scenario considered, such a reservoir could store enough energy to meet the energy consumption of a small city. This capacity makes the technology a promising alternative to complement other forms of renewable energy storage.
The research comes at a time when the need for energy storage solutions is becoming increasingly urgent, given the growth in energy production from renewable sources such as wind and solar, which due to their intermittent nature require reliable storage methods to ensure continuous supply.
