PS wants reduction of VAT on fuels and food basket with immediate effects

Jornal Económico13 September 2026 at 15:22

The Socialist Party defends that the measures to reduce VAT on fuels and the food basket should be implemented immediately. At a press conference at party headquarters, Eurico Brilhante Dias, the parliamentary leader of PS, stated that Portuguese people will not hold out until January to feel the effects of these measures.

PS accused Chega of helping the Government by presenting bills that would only produce effects in January. Eurico Brilhante Dias stated that Chega is a party that "deceives and dissembles," being "free the government from the burden of protecting Portuguese people."

The parliamentary leader of PS considered that the Government needs to be aware that these are important measures for the population. "Portuguese people will not wait until January. Portuguese people need help with fuels and the food basket today, and today is already too late," declared Eurico Brilhante Dias.

The two parties have been exchanging accusations in recent days. André Ventura challenged PS to approve Chega's measure to reduce VAT on fuels from 23% to 13%.

Why this matters

Readers in Portugal are directly affected by the high cost of fuels and food, and this news interests them because it reveals a live political debate about what fiscal measures the Government should take and when. The exchange of accusations between PS and Chega shows how opposition parties are pressuring the executive, with PS arguing that Chega's proposals are insufficient and late. PS's position may influence the political agenda and possibly accelerate measures to support Portuguese families' income.
