Hospital Lourenço Jorge, in Barra da Tijuca, reported that at least 15 people came to the facility by the end of Saturday night to receive prophylactic treatment after undergoing glucose measurement tests during a science fair at unit II of Colégio Tamandaré, in Recreio.
The situation occurred because a student used the same lancet (needle) to collect blood from up to three people during the exams. The Ministry of Health protocol establishes that, in similar situations, the person should seek medical care within 72 hours to receive antiretroviral medications and prevent infection by viruses such as HIV and hepatitis. The treatment lasts 30 days.
The school directed students who underwent the exam during the cultural fair to go to the hospital for care. A mother of a teenage student at the institution who was examined by the other student said she went to Hospital Lourenço Jorge to seek treatment after learning of the case.
