Carlos Lopes was honored in the Noble Hall of the Town Hall of Arraiolos on Saturday, September 12, at a ceremony integrated into the Youth Festival 2026. The event celebrated the career and contribution of one of the greatest figures in the history of Portuguese sport.
Carlos Lopes is the first Portuguese athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, having won the marathon at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984. Throughout his career, he also became world cross-country champion, becoming an essential reference in national and international athletics.
The Mayor of Arraiolos, Jorge Macau, highlighted during the ceremony the historical relationship between the municipality and athletics and the importance of sports practice in the development of young people. Paulo Guerra, Vice-President of the Portuguese Athletics Federation and former athlete connected to the municipality, also attended the event, as did representatives from various local sports clubs.
The tribute highlighted not only the titles achieved by Carlos Lopes, but also the legacy he leaves and the inspiration that his career continues to represent for new generations of athletes, at a time of valorization of sport and youth in Arraiolos.
