Two brothers inherited a house built in the 1940s in the heart of the Portuguese Algarve, next to Spain, and transformed it into Casa Modesta, a rural accommodation that has become an international icon recognized for its ability to preserve the memory of a place and a family. Architect Vânia Brito Fernandes led the intervention project on the property in homage to her mother, Modesta María, maintaining the traditional identity of the Algarve.
The intervention at Casa Modesta preserved characteristic elements of traditional Algarve architecture, such as flat roofs and the wood-fired greenhouse. Surrounded by the vegetation of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, the complex offers an atmosphere of tranquility thanks to the natural light that transforms the facades throughout the day.
The accommodation features nine independent rooms, equipped with private patios and windows that frame the landscape. Casa Modesta values the connection between interior and exterior, recovering the hospitality of old family homes and promoting interaction among guests, proving that contemporary architecture can reinterpret tradition without losing its essence.
