The number of Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo rose to more than 7,000, the worst epidemic in the country's history, although the peak may have already been surpassed, according to Congolese authorities. The extremely deadly disease has already killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years.

The DRC declared its 17th Ebola epidemic in mid-May, several weeks late. The outbreak began in the Ituri province in the northeast of the country and currently affects regions in the east of the DRC.
