An Iranian merchant ship was hit Sunday by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing one death and three injuries, according to Iranian authorities. The attack occurred around 05:00 local time, off the islands of Hengam and Qeshm.
Iranian authorities confirmed the incident after the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations office (UKMTO) had reported an attack on a ship in the same area, without identifying its origin.
The governor of the city of Qeshm, Amir Teymouri, was the authority who confirmed the data on the attack and its geographic location.
The incident raises tensions in the Strait of Hormuz region, one of the world's main shipping routes, at a time when conflicts in the Middle East have been intensifying.
