High interest rates and household debt negatively impacted Brazil's high-tech industry sector. According to a study by the Institute for Industrial Development Studies (Iedi), the high-tech sector recorded a cumulative decline of 1.9% in the second quarter. The main driver of the decline was the electronics complex, which has now shown declines for six consecutive quarters.
The production of the electronics complex, which includes computer equipment, radio, TV, communication, and precision medical instruments, fell 14.9% in June and 7.9% in the quarter. This negative performance contrasts with the slight expansion of the broader manufacturing industry, which grew 1% in June and 0.7% in the second quarter.
According to Rafael Cagnin, from Iedi, who conducted the study, the observed recovery came from sectors that were previously reducing production. He explained that in the second quarter, only segments that were coming from several bad quarters grew, representing a period of some relief after a sequence of four quarters without growth.
Despite the challenging scenario, some segments still maintain momentum, such as the pharmaceutical and aircraft sectors. The article mentions that there is a group of medium-sized industries that continue to show some positive performance within the overall panorama of the Brazilian industry.
