Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common viruses in the world, estimated to infect approximately 95% of adults. For most people, the infection does not cause obvious symptoms. Once in the body, the virus can remain for life, usually in a latent state.
EBV is associated with several types of cancer, multiple sclerosis, and other health complications, especially in people with compromised immune systems.
In a study published in February in the journal Cell Reports Medicine, researchers developed antibodies that target two proteins found on the surface of viral particles.
The antibodies were designed to block the virus from entering cells, representing a promising approach to preventing or treating diseases associated with EBV.
