Chimpanzees used in vaccine tests receive healthcare in Liberia

SIC Notícias13 September 2026 at 08:30

Chimpanzees used in vaccine tests and biomedical research receive healthcare in Liberia. In 2015, the organization Humane World for Animals assumed permanent responsibility for the 60 chimpanzees that remained at the end of the research program.

The animals are now under the care of the organization, which provides veterinary care and health monitoring.

Most of the chimpanzees have since lived on a group of islands covered by mangrove forests, providing a more suitable environment for their quality of life.

This case represents one of the largest rescue and continued care programs for primates used in biomedical research.
