Metal dream: in the interior of Rio, motorcycles multiply and are essential even in the fields and pastures

In São José de Ubá, a municipality of approximately seven thousand inhabitants in Northwestern Fluminense, about 300 kilometers from the capital, motorcycles and scooters represent 51.7% of the vehicle fleet. The local economy revolves around agriculture and livestock, and the use of motorcycles has become essential both for work and daily commuting. A small bridge connects the urban center to one of the main rural hubs of the town, and along the winding asphalt road, it is common to see motorcycles lined up along the roadside, many of them carrying workers heading to the fields. Behind a wooden gate adorned with a cow skull, a dirt path leads to tomato plantations, a local specialty that colors the tops of the hills in the region. Around there, all workers share the same means of transportation: the motorcycle is used both for riding and for going as a passenger, allowing them to cover the large distances between properties and work sites in the countryside.
